Popular journalist announces he is leaving
After more than a decade and a half with CBS, veteran journalist John Dickerson has announced his departure from the network, marking the end of an era for one of the most respected figures in American broadcast journalism.
In an Instagram post shared Monday, October 27, the 57-year-old CBS Evening News coanchor wrote, «At the end of this year, I will leave CBS, sixteen years after I sat in as Face the Nation anchor for the first time I am extremely grateful for all that CBS gave me - the work, the audience's attention and the honor of being a part of the network's history.»
He concluded with a message to his colleagues and viewers: «I will miss you.» Dickerson did not share any details about his next chapter, leaving fans and peers curious about what comes next for the seasoned journalist.
John Dickerson's legacy at CBS: from «Face the Nation» to «Evening News»
Dickerson joined CBS News in 2009, quickly becoming one of its most trusted political voices. He began as a guest anchor on Face the Nation that same year, later taking over full-time from 2015 to 2018.
In 2011, he was promoted to political director, a role that positioned him at the heart of the network's political coverage through multiple election cycles.
Following his success at Face the Nation, Dickerson coanchored CBS This Morning before moving to CBS Evening News in early 2024, alongside Maurice DuBois.
The duo replaced Norah O'Donnell, who transitioned to a senior correspondent role with the network.
CBS News president Tom Cibrowski praised Dickerson in a statement, describing him as a journalist who «epitomizes the very best of journalism.»
He added that the network would take time to celebrate Dickerson's work and his impact on CBS's legacy of credibility and thoughtful reporting.
Dickerson's departure comes amid broader leadership and editorial shifts within CBS News and its parent company, Paramount.
Earlier this month, former New York Times journalist Bari Weiss was appointed editor in chief of CBS News following Paramount's acquisition of The Free Press.
The move, according to Paramount CEO David Ellison, is part of an effort to «modernize content and connect more directly with global audiences.»
For Dickerson, whose calm authority and intellectual curiosity defined his tenure, this farewell feels both personal and symbolic.
He leaves behind a reputation for fairness, rigor, and empathy - qualities that shaped his interviews and reporting across some of America's most pivotal political moments.
CBS is expected to announce new plans for the Evening News lineup in the coming months.
