Sometimes, we have to report news that is completely tragic and devasting -- and unfortunately, that's the case tonight. It's with great sadness we announce the passing of Matt Stevens, a former Super Bowl Champion with the New England Patriots. He was only 51 years old. As it stands, no cause of death has been announced.

The Matt Stevens story is one of tragedy and devastation.
To give you some background on his football career, Stevens entered the NFL when the Buffalo Bills selected him in the third round of the 1996 draft. Over his eight-year professional career, he played for several teams, including the Patriots, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins, and Houston Texans.
He went on to be one of the most outstanding defenders in modern day football - even winning the NFL Super Bowl Championship back in 2002.

Matt Stevens suffered a tragic accident

After his pro football career ended, Matt Stevens was involved in a horrific motor vehicle accident.
In 2007, Stevens was riding his motorcycle, but he hit a patch of gravel and horrifically launched into a steel post, severing his spinal cord in half.
According to ESPN , He was paralyzed from the waist down but took part in clinical trials that allowed him to regain mobility with special leg braces, according to the team.
The Patriots put out a statement Thursday saying they were "deeply saddened" by Stevens' death. The team did not address a cause of death.

Stevens played two seasons at safety for the Patriots (2000-01) and was part of their Super Bowl XXXVI victory over the Rams that kicked off their dynastic run.

After the accident, Stevens never fully recovered. According to sources, he suffered from terrible depression as result of the accident.
While we don't know if his depression was linked to his death, we would like to extend our deepest condolonces to everyone impacted by this terrible tragedy.
RIP.
