Sad news in the media: journalist Christiane Amanpour announces that her cancer has returned
Renowned CNN journalist Christiane Amanpour has revealed that her ovarian cancer has returned, but the 67-year-old anchor says she remains optimistic and that her treatment is going well.
Amanpour shared the update on the «Changing the Ovarian Cancer Story» podcast on Thursday, October 23, where she opened up about her ongoing battle with the disease she was first diagnosed with in 2021.
«I have it again, but it's being very well managed,» she said, adding that this recurrence has been caught early and is under control.
«This is one of the whole things that people have to understand about some cancers.»
Christiane Amanpour is fighting a courageous battle against cancer and remains positive
The veteran journalist explained that after having major surgery to remove the affected organs in 2021, the cancer later returned in a lymph node.
She is now undergoing immunotherapy, a treatment designed to boost her body's natural defenses against the disease.
«It's the opposite of grueling,» Amanpour said of her therapy. «I have no side effects. I take pills every day, and every six weeks I go into the hospital for an infusion. It's a good balance, and I feel strong.»
Her oncologist, Dr. Angela George of the Royal Marsden Hospital in London, described Amanpour's cancer as a rare form of ovarian cancer, representing fewer than 10% of cases.
«It's one where we see a larger mass on the ovary,» Dr. George explained, emphasizing that individualized treatments like Amanpour's can dramatically improve outcomes.
Amanpour first went public with her diagnosis in June 2021, after several weeks off the air.
At the time, she told her CNN viewers she had undergone successful surgery followed by months of chemotherapy, expressing confidence in her long-term prognosis.
Since her initial diagnosis, Amanpour has become a vocal advocate for cancer awareness, urging women to stay alert to early symptoms and to seek medical advice without delay.
Her candidness about her journey has been widely praised, both by colleagues and by viewers who see her as a model of grace and strength.
Today, she continues to anchor CNN's international coverage while balancing her health regimen.
Her outlook remains grounded in hope - and in the belief that living openly with illness can help others face their own challenges with courage.
