A terrible tragedy strikes the NFL
Former New York Jets center Nick Mangold has passed away at 41 due to complications from a genetic kidney disease. The NFL has lost one of its true leaders.
Earlier this month, Mangold shared that he was on dialysis and searching for a kidney donor. His open letter to fans showed courage, humility, and gratitude.
The message deeply moved both the Jets and Ohio State Buckeyes communities, where Mangold first made his mark as a standout offensive lineman in the early 2000s.
Nick Mangold and the New York Jets: a bond beyond football
Jets owner Woody Johnson honored him in a statement, calling Mangold «the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade.»
His toughness and leadership defined an era of Jets football.
A first-round pick in 2006, Mangold earned seven Pro Bowl selections and anchored the «Nick & Brick» duo with D'Brickashaw Ferguson.
Together, they powered the Jets to back-to-back AFC Championship runs under coach Rex Ryan.
After retiring in 2017, Mangold stayed close to the game, coaching young players in New Jersey. He often said he wanted to «teach the game of football - and a bit about life along the way.»
Fans adored his larger-than-life personality. During his 2022 Jets Ring of Honor induction, he cracked open a beer on stage - a classic Mangold moment that drew laughter and cheers.
Mangold is survived by his wife, Lauren, and their four children: Matthew, Eloise, Thomas, and Charlotte. The football world is wrapping its arms around them today.
Nick Mangold will be remembered not only for his dominance on the field but for the heart and humility he carried off it.
